These specifications reflect HM Digital's current COM-100 product information.

EC Measurement

EC = Electrical Conductivity

EC measures the ability of water to conduct electrical current. It is commonly used as an indicator of the concentration of dissolved ionic substances.

COM-100 EC Range

0–9990 µS/cm

or

0–9.99 mS/cm

EC Resolution

Measurement Range Resolution
0–99 µS 0.1 µS
100–999 µS 1 µS
1000–9990 µS 10 µS
0–9.99 mS 0.01 mS

TDS Measurement

TDS = Total Dissolved Solids

TDS represents the concentration of dissolved substances in water and is generally expressed in ppm or mg/L.

The COM-100 supports multiple TDS scales instead of using a single fixed conversion factor.

TDS Range

0–8560 ppm

or

0–8.56 ppt

Available TDS Scales

0.5 NaCl Scale

and

0.7 442™ Scale

The meter allows the user to select the appropriate conversion mode for the application.

Why Multiple TDS Scales Matter

Different types of dissolved substances can produce different relationships between EC and TDS.

The COM-100 therefore provides different conversion factors rather than simply multiplying EC by one fixed number.

The supported conversion approaches include:

  • KCl

  • NaCl

  • 442™

The manufacturer's manual describes these as non-linear conversions intended to better represent different types of water and applications.

Automatic Temperature Compensation

The COM-100 includes Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC).

Electrical conductivity changes as water temperature changes. The meter therefore compensates for temperature differences to help provide more consistent EC/TDS readings.

The COM-100 uses three temperature coefficients associated with its measurement scales.

Waterproof IP67 Housing

The COM-100 has an IP67 waterproof housing.

This means the meter is designed for protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion under the conditions defined by the IP67 rating.

HM Digital specifically describes the COM-100 as:

"submersible; floats."

This makes it particularly convenient for direct testing of water samples.

Replaceable Sensor

The COM-100 uses a detachable platinum electrode sensor.

Sensor Model

SP-C1

The replaceable sensor allows users to replace the electrode rather than replacing the complete meter when the sensor reaches the end of its usable life.

Digital Calibration

The COM-100 uses digital push-button calibration.

Unlike meters that require a screwdriver for calibration, the COM-100 allows calibration through its buttons.

The meter is factory calibrated using a 1413 µS conductivity solution and can subsequently be recalibrated to a desired point within its measurement range.

Display

The COM-100 features a large, easy-to-read LCD display.

The display provides:

  • EC/TDS measurement

  • Measurement unit

  • Temperature

  • Battery status

  • Hold indication where applicable

Temperature can be displayed simultaneously with the primary measurement.

Data Hold Function

The Data Hold function freezes the displayed measurement.

This is useful when the meter is being used in a location where it is difficult to continuously view the screen.

Typical uses include:

  • Recording water-quality measurements

  • Comparing samples

  • Field testing

  • Laboratory measurements

  • RO service inspections

Automatic Shut-Off

The COM-100 includes an automatic shut-off feature designed to conserve battery power.

Older HM Digital documentation specifies automatic shut-off after approximately 5 minutes of inactivity.

Low Battery Indicator

The meter includes a low-battery indicator, allowing the user to identify when the batteries need replacement.

Power Supply

Battery: 2 × AAA

The current upgraded COM-100 package includes two AAA batteries.

Dimensions & Weight

Dimensions

18.5 × 3.4 × 3.4 cm

7.3 × 1.3 × 1.3 inches

Weight

127 g

The compact handheld design makes it suitable for both laboratory and field applications.

Applications

Water Purification

The COM-100 can be used to compare conductivity/TDS before and after filtration and purification.

RO Water Testing

Useful for monitoring water quality associated with reverse-osmosis systems.

It can help compare:

Feed Water → RO Water → Filtered Water

Drinking Water

Can be used for general conductivity and TDS monitoring of tap and filtered water.

Hydroponics

EC is an important parameter for monitoring nutrient solutions.

The COM-100 can provide EC readings useful for hydroponic nutrient management.

Aquaculture

Useful for monitoring conductivity/TDS conditions in aquatic systems.

Aquariums

The multiple EC/TDS modes make the meter useful for freshwater and other aquarium applications.

Swimming Pools & Spas

Can be used for conductivity/TDS monitoring as part of broader water-quality testing.

Wastewater

Suitable for general conductivity monitoring in wastewater applications.

Boilers & Cooling Towers

EC monitoring can be useful for tracking dissolved ionic content in industrial water systems.

Laboratories

The COM-100 can be used for general laboratory water-quality measurements.

Environmental Testing

Useful for field measurements and environmental water monitoring.

HM Digital specifically lists water purification, wastewater regulation, aquaculture, hydroponics, laboratories, pools/spas, ecology testing, boilers/cooling towers and water treatment among the COM-100 applications.

Recommended Mode by Application

HM Digital's COM-100 guide provides examples of suitable modes for different applications.

Application Suggested Mode
Drinking Water ppm-442 / ppm-NaCl
Water Filtration ppm-442 / ppm-NaCl
RO / Purification ppm-442 / ppm-NaCl
Hydroponics Follow nutrient manufacturer's requirements

Basic Calibration Procedure

  1. Prepare a suitable certified conductivity calibration solution.

  2. Turn on the COM-100.

  3. Select the appropriate EC mode.

  4. Rinse the sensor.

  5. Place the sensor into the calibration solution.

  6. Allow the measurement to stabilize.

  7. Perform digital calibration using the meter buttons.

The COM-100 is positioned above basic single-parameter TDS meters because it provides:

EC + TDS + Temperature + Multiple Scales + ATC + Replaceable Sensor + IP67 Waterproofing

This makes it particularly appropriate for professional users who need more detailed water-quality measurements.
