Product Description

The ERMA 0–32% Brix Hand Refractometer uses the principle of light refraction to determine the concentration of dissolved solids in a liquid.

A small amount of sample is placed directly onto the instrument's prism. When viewed through the optical eyepiece, the boundary between the light and dark areas corresponds to the Brix value on the calibrated scale.

The 0–32% Brix range provides a useful measurement window for many food, beverage, agricultural and laboratory samples.

What is Brix?

°Brix is a scale commonly used to express the concentration of dissolved solids in a liquid, particularly sugar solutions.

For a sucrose-water solution, a reading of approximately 10° Brix corresponds to about 10 g of sucrose per 100 g of solution.

For fruit juices and other complex samples, Brix should generally be considered an indication of total soluble solids (TSS) rather than an exact measurement of sugar concentration.

Applications

🍊 Food & Beverage Industry

  • Fruit juice testing
  • Fresh fruit juice quality control
  • Soft drinks
  • Syrups
  • Sugar solutions
  • Jams and preserves
  • Food-processing liquids
  • Beverage production
  • Incoming raw-material inspection
  • Finished-product QC

🍎 Agriculture & Horticulture

  • Fruit maturity testing
  • Produce quality assessment
  • Harvest quality evaluation
  • Fruit TSS measurement
  • Juice quality testing
  • Agricultural research
  • Crop quality monitoring

🧪 Laboratory & Quality Control

  • Total soluble solids measurement
  • Raw-material testing
  • In-process quality control
  • Finished-product testing
  • Research & development
  • Routine laboratory analysis

🏭 Industrial Applications

  • Process concentration checks
  • Water-soluble formulations
  • Selected process liquids
  • Production quality control
  • Concentration monitoring

How to Use

  1. Open the transparent daylight/sample cover.
  2. Clean the prism with distilled or deionized water.
  3. Dry the prism using a soft, lint-free cloth.
  4. Place a few drops of the sample on the prism.
  5. Close the cover gently.
  6. Ensure the sample spreads evenly over the prism.
  7. Point the refractometer toward a suitable light source.
  8. Look through the eyepiece.
  9. Adjust the focus until the scale is clearly visible.
  10. Read the Brix value at the boundary between the light and dark areas.
  11. Clean the prism after completing the measurement.

Calibration

Before routine measurements, the refractometer should be calibrated according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A common reference check is performed using distilled/deionized water. If adjustment is necessary, use the supplied calibration adjustment mechanism.

For best results:

  • Calibrate before important measurements.
  • Keep the prism clean.
  • Use samples at appropriate temperature conditions.
  • Avoid bubbles on the prism.
  • Ensure the sample completely covers the measuring surface.
