The ERMA Hand Refractometer 0–20% Brix works on the optical principle of refraction to determine the concentration of dissolved substances in a liquid. A small quantity of sample is placed on the prism, and the resulting light/dark boundary is viewed through the eyepiece against the calibrated Brix scale.
Its 0–20% Brix range makes it particularly useful for relatively low-to-medium concentration samples such as fruit juices, beverages, sugar solutions and other food-processing liquids.
The instrument incorporates Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) to help compensate for temperature effects during measurement.
What is Brix?
°Brix is a commonly used scale for expressing the concentration of dissolved solids in a liquid, particularly sucrose solutions.
For a pure sucrose-water solution, a reading of approximately 10° Brix corresponds to about 10 g of sucrose per 100 g of solution.
For fruit juice, beverages and other complex samples, the Brix reading is generally used as an indication of total soluble solids (TSS) rather than an exact measurement of sugar alone.

How to Use
- Open the daylight/sample cover.
- Clean the prism with distilled or deionized water.
- Dry the prism with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Place a few drops of the sample onto the prism.
- Close the cover gently.
- Ensure the sample spreads evenly over the prism.
- Point the instrument toward a suitable light source.
- Look through the eyepiece.
- Adjust the focus until the scale is sharp.
- Read the Brix value at the boundary between the light and dark areas.
- Clean the prism immediately after measurement.
Calibration
For routine use, calibrate the refractometer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
A common zero-reference check uses distilled/deionized water. If adjustment is required, use the supplied calibration mechanism.
Because temperature can affect refractive-index measurements, calibration and testing should be performed in accordance with the instrument's specified temperature conditions. The ERMA 1E2-02 is specified with ATC and adjustable calibration.
